Very excited, as today is the last day of school and then the kids are on holiday for 23 days. We are not going away as Neil has to work, but I love a stay-cation.
Sleeping in, staying in my PJ's until late in the morning. Bliss!!
I will take the kids to movies, probably ice skating and definitely to the beach. We bought a surfboard for Laura for her birthday as she had decided she wanted to surf. I also plan to try and finish sorting out my craft/sewing room and I need to find a new chair for it. Have plans to do some sewing and I can't remember the last time I scrapbooked.

It is almost time for the yummy Taste of Durban. Laura and I went last year on an extremely warm day. We had a wonderful time eating our way around the event and Laura’s favourite was the calamari from Havana Grill at Suncoast, if I remember correctly she had three plates.

The Pick n Pay Taste of Durban is back from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 July at Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World (Suncoast). Chefs from nine of Durban’s top restaurants will create special menus of starter-sized dishes, including their signature dishes, designed to reflect their individual philosophies, whilst showcasing seasonal and premium ingredients. Taste of Durban 2014 promises to be the most exciting ‘foodie’ event of the year.
Marcelle Roberts from Café 1999 is back for the third-year running with her inimitable brand of casual cuisine. Louise Potgieter from Havana Grill at Suncoast and Themba Mngoma from Little Havana. Newcomer Nardia Adams, from Asian Tapas spot Greedy Buddha, will be cooking up a storm on the grill with Lucy Markewicz flying the colours for Freedom Café. Popular Indian restaurant Amaravathi Palki, Market, Beluga Durban, Vigour & Verve and exciting new addition to the line-up this year, The Durban eKasi Experience, brings the total of participating restaurants to nine.
Over three days, this unique international restaurant festival will bring together Durban’s most dedicated and sophisticated foodies in an al fresco, dining celebration. Visitors will have the opportunity to sip, sample and shop their way around the festival. This year’s show offers a range of brand new features and culinary experiences, to ensure that there is something for everybody to enjoy.

On a beautiful Saturday (14 June) morning I made my way to Durban with my Mom and Laura my daughter, to see the 2014 East Coast Radio House & Garden Show. We were attending the second day of the show so I did expect it to be quite busy. I parked in the parking lot over the road from the Durban Exhibition Centre (R20). The parking was already half full by the time we parked and this was about 10:10am. The show opens at 10am every day and was closing that day at 10pm. We used the pedestrian bridge to cross the road and entered quickly with no wait whatsoever.
The outside area that you have to walk through in order to reach the exhibition hall, is dedicated to caravans, outdoor furniture, water features etc. Hello three women!! So we walked at quite a pace to get through. The main entrance to the exhibition hall was on the front of the building, but as we had been last year we headed straight through the side gate on the left side so we could go look at the Homegrown Fair. On the left side just through the gate is the gardening zone, but as I don’t have a green finger we bypassed that. We turned left into the smaller hall that holds the Homegrown Fair and now began all the fun.
Our first stop was at Daniela’s who makes the most divine macaroons in all different colours and flavours. The lady herself was there so we had a bit of a chat. She has a shop in the Oxford Village in Hillcrest which of course is just up the road from Kloof. The macaroons are R10 each or you can buy the show special of 12 for R100. Next sweet and delicious stop was at Tasha's Fudge directly opposite Daniela’s. The lady herself was also there and we got to have a chat, mmmm do you see a bit of a pattern developing???? I tried not to go too overboard and was going to just buy 4 pieces of fudge until it was explained to me that if I buy 5 I get 1 free ...... YES! This is the show special. Now there is not only what you know of as traditional fudge, Tasha's makes in so many different flavours including red velvet. There is also fudge sauce! It was time to feed my washi tape addication, and Washi Bug was there to help. Yes, yes more chatting and this time to Jaime of Washi Bug. Laura helped me choose some washi tape, which was extremely hard to do. They have a huge range of the most gorgeous colours and patterns. The one tape I had to buy was the Protea by Surita Brink. Washi Bug ran a competition for people to design their own tape and she was the winner. They are running a raffle at the show and you could win 100m Mega washi pop. While standing at Washi Bug we could smell these wonderful scents and I knew just what they were from. My favourite soap - Rondavel. Chikondi was taking care of the stall. Chikondi and Kate are the couple that make the incredible soaps and balms. My favourite soap of theirs is the Milk & Honey, but all their soap smells AMAZING. I love that their soaps are long lasting and don’t turn to mush. Find Rondavel at the I Heart Market every month. After a brief chat to Chikondi we back tracked a bit to look at Anthology which was situated next to Washi Bug. After looking at Anthology we took a slow walk round the rest of the hall. We discovered Bentwood in the corner and I thought their display stand looked familiar, and I was right. Bentwood has a stall at the I Heart Market and my friend Inge bought me a Corningware dish for my birthday from them. Mom and I really enjoyed looking at all the lovely items like JAJ Pyrex and pretty tea sets. The lady manning the stall told us that furniture was also going to be brought in that evening. Pity we missed seeing that. Unfortunately no Corningware for me to buy Lbentwood@telkomsa.net
We wandered on and would have wandered by Mandara but a very nice young guy decided that Laura would look great with a leather flap-over bag. We moved straight onto another stall that stocks leather bags, wallets and other leather products. Now this was a stall that I knew from the I Heart Market, Savior Brand Co. Feeling rather thirsty after all our looking and talking we made our way to the food section next to the Homegrown Fair. We got something to drink and then Laura spotted the mini pizzas from Maddison Bakery. They were in the process of making them and would only be ready in 15 minutes, so we decided to quickly look in the main hall.
We walked in a bit and came across the Robertson’s Celebrity Kitchen and were able to watch Jackie Camerson (@jackie_cameron) of Hartford House in action. Couldn’t stay to watch till the end as Laura needed to get her mini pizzas. We arrived back at the bakery and discovered the pizzas were selling like hot cakes! I bought 3 mini pizzas, 1 for me and 2 for Laura. Delicious and divine and so, so yummy!! We went back before we left to buy 2 more for Laura.
So the next item on my show agenda was to find the Ginja Food Magazine stall. I looked at the show layout and I just couldn’t see where it was. We eventually found it at the main front entrance of the hall. I wanted to buy their lastest issue as Laura’s picture was supposed to be in the letters to the editor section. Laura and I excitedly and looked and there she was! She says she is going to start practising her autograph. We bought the issue and Laura chose a balloon to pop and received a 5% discount voucher to use on the Ginja shop. @GinjaFood www.ginjafood.com
We had 10 minutes to make it back to the Robertson’s Celebrity Kitchen to watch Chef Jacqui Brown and her 2 kids Taylor and Hayden in action. It was great to sit down and relax for a bit as it gets very tiring walking around the show. What a lovely baking demo by Chef Jacqui and her kids. My Mom read her copy of the latest magazine on Sunday and said by seeing her and the kids in action made the magazine far more special. They made chocolate mocha cupcakes and blueberry smoothies. After the demo we went up to talk to Chef Jacqui and asked her to please sign our magazine and to show her the picture of Laura in the magazine. We took a very brief walk around the main hall to look for bathroom suppliers as Neil will soon be busy re-doing the bathroom for Caleb’s room. I took brochures from 2 suppliers and then we made our way out via the pizzas.

On the 28th May I went to collect my parents for my Mother’s birthday surprise. I had told them that I needed to fetch them at 1:45pm in order to reach our destination before 2:30pm. We drove and drove and my Mom got more excited and interested as to where we were going. Eventually we reached Umhlanga and I headed down towards the Oyster Box Hotel and turned in and said “surprise!"
We were greeted by the very well dressed guard at the booms who asked me whether we were checking in (I wish!) or were there for the high tea. I confirmed we were there for the high tea and gave my name. He told us to drive into the parking area and that an attendant would help us find a parking. I safely parked my car and on the way to the hotel I said to my Mom that I hoped we would get to see the famous cat Skabenga. Just as I finished that sentence we reach the entrance and there he is, lying down and giving himself a clean. How funny!
We were warmly welcomed and the door opened for us to enter the hotel. Made our way to the Palm Court where the high tea is held and I gave my name. What a fabulous table with comfy chairs and beautiful tea cups. There was even a welcome card on the table (so impressed).

Our waiter for the afternoon was Marcel and he explained that he would serve us tea, coffee and juice when we wanted. Also offered a welcoming sparkling wine or non-alcoholic if you wished. The high tea eats were on our left and we could serve ourselves. My Mom was thrilled!
The high tea eats table was groaning with delicious looking food. Dad was happy with the savoury eats selection as he doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth. There were beef sosaties, samoosas and and sandwiches with different fillings. On the sweet side there was cake, bread and butter pudding with hot custard, crème brulee, tea breads, cupcakes and a whole lot more.

While we were busy enjoying the delights of the high tea a member of staff (sorry didn’t remember her name) came round to find out how we were doing and to wish my Mom a happy birthday. When I phoned to make the booking for the high tea I was asked if it was for a special occasion and had said yes for my Mother’s birthday.

I was extremely impressed with the service we received, felt like royalty. Marcel would remove our plates once we were done and would make sure our coffee pot was full, and give us more cutlery when we needed. I loved all the eats I had but my favourite was the incredible crème brulee – creamy and so divine!
We had basically finished eating when Marcel appeared with a plate for my Mother. On the plate was Happy Birthday piped in chocolate and a cupcake with a lit sparkler. As it was delivered the man playing the piano played the happy birthday song. The delight on my Mom’s face was priceless. By the way – I did not organise the cupcake it was a complete surprise to me too. Mom was too full to eat the cupcake so Marcel put it into a box to take home. Very sweetly he told Mom that he had added an extra cupcake as well.
We thanked Marcel for the wonderful service and slowly made our way to the car. The parking attendant was near my car and he waited for me to unlock and then opened my door for me to get in!! He also opened and closed the doors for my parents.
What an amazing afternoon and such a blessing for my Mother. We still can’t stop talking about the wonderful experience, food and service.

I am going to go completely out of my comfort zone (ha ha) on the blog today. I have never reviewed a product before so this is a first for me.
In December I won ZONE Cosmetics from The World According to a Princess Blog. I started to use the products on the 25 February after the skincare I was using at that time was finished.
Firstly, let me tell you a bit about the company before I tell you how I feel about the products. ZONE Cosmetics is a division of Dermasure (est. 1995) which was started by Smiley and Jane Van Zyl. The ZONE cosmetic range was launched in 2004.
ZONE Skin Care Range - medical science for youthful skin
The product is a break through cosmeceutical, which has been designed to meet the requirements of sun damaged and prematurely ageing skin. The Zone Skin Care Range, started in 2004, contains scientifically researched concentrations of Co-Enzyme Q10 and network anti-oxidants at levels where it will make a difference, rather than follow cosmetic trends.
One of the primary causes of skin ageing is oxidative stress caused by continuous sun exposure, as well as free radicals Research has shown that the correct use of powerful anti-oxidants, and at the correct concentrations, helps to slow down this ageing process. I completely agree with the above. My skin was thoroughly cleansed and the last traces of make-up removed. It did not make my skin fell dry or tight and I liked the feel of the gel cleanser and its neutral smell. Very easy to rinse off the cleanser.
ZONE Day Cream R280.00 (These are basic “fixed” retail prices) 50ml tube : A non-greasy moisturizer with a powerful and effective form of Co Enzyme Q10, plus high concentrations of rejuvenating anti-oxidants which have an anti-wrinkle and smoothing action on the skin, helping to repair visible signs of photo ageing. Extra protection comes from a broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF20).
It was non-greasy but I found it a bit difficult to apply. I had to really stroke it over and over until it was absorbed onto the skin. There was no feeling of pulling or dryness once it was applied, my skin was very happy with the cream. There was no discernable smell. I liked that I did not have to apply sunscreen. No problems in applying make-up over the cream.
ZONE Night Cream R307.00 (These are basic “fixed” retail prices) 50ml tube: An ultra-hydrating night cream with a powerful and effective form of Co Enzyme Q10 combined with high concentrations of rejuvenating anti-oxidants which have an anti-wrinkle and smooth action on the skin, helping to repair visible signs of photo ageing. Zone Night Cream has double percentage levels of the actives together with hydrating Aloe extract and nourishing Evening Primrose Oil. The range is subtly fragranced with Vanilla Essential Oil making it suitable for men or woman.
This cream was a lot thinner than the day cream and therefore much easier to spread over the face on application. I didn’t like the smell of it though. I could only smell it when I was applying it and afterwards the smell disappeared, which I was happy about. The night cream was also non-greasy and my skin felt really good. It absorbed well so no residue was left on my pillowcase.
ZONE Eye Gel - R195.00 (These are basic “fixed” retail prices) 15 ml : A smooth, rapid absorbing eye gel which contains high concentrations of Co Enzyme Q10. Ideally suited to decrease puffiness, dark circles and fine lines, while restoring a smooth, more radiant appearance to the skin.
This was a light non-sticky eye gel which was rapidly absorbed. There was no discernable smell from the product. I haven’t noticed any puffiness on my eyes while using the gel and I don’t seem to see any major lines even though I am now 41. No problems when applying make-up over the gel.
I wish I had taken a photo of my face before starting on these products to see if there has been a difference to my skin, I seem to think there has been. As I have said below the products, I experienced no dry or pulling feeling to my skin. My skin also had no adverse reactions. With daily use the products lasted just over three months.
